Lempira: Sangre y Ore - Baltimore, MD

Synopsis of Lempira: Sangre y Ore- May 2024

      Baltimore Rock Opera Society

Pitched by Sebastian Ochoa Arguijo, Written by Gabe Shatkin, Jamie Ginsberg, Lucas Gerace, Nic Cole, and Sebastian Ochoa Arguijo

      Composed by Sebastian Ochoa Arguijo

Deep in the jungles of what is modern day Honduras and El Salvador, home of warring Lenca factions, Lempira’s conquest is interrupted by an arrival of a dangerous new threat. Faced with the inevitability of colonial imperialism, Lempira must overcome his own pride, embrace a cause greater than himself, and unite the people he was once fighting against.

LEMPIRA is the massive mytho-historic tale of the invincible Lord of the Mountain, condensing a decades-long resistance against Spanish imperialism into one night of theatrical spectacle. Based on true events of Mesoamerican history & mythology, this heavily stylized retelling is filled with Latin-inspired metal music, epic storytelling, and arresting visuals that capture the rich, awe-inspiring spirit of indigenous Latin American culture.

With characters who use both English and Spanish, we invite the audience to look past the barrier of language and identify with characters through their actions and song. Rest assured, there will be projected translations in both languages during the show.

        Bobo: Jae Jones

        Written by Lorraine Hansberry

THE STORY: Set on Chicago’s South Side, Lorraine Hansberry's celebrated play concerns the divergent dreams and conflicts in three generations of the Younger family: son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis, and matriarch Lena.
When her deceased husband’s insurance money comes through, Mama Lena dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans: buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school.
The tension and prejudice they face form this seminal American drama. Hansberry's portrait of one family’s struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world is a searing and timeless document of hope and inspiration.

Originally auditioning for the role of Apollo, Jae was cast as Zeus in this world premiere. Father of the Gods is confronted by his children about their irrelevance to the world today. The rebranding efforts conflict with his past and toxic masculinity which has always been out of control. In our current PC world, none of those tendencies are resonating with the population and need revamping. Zeus is not on board and decides to slip away from his children to see how they fall apart without him. This coincides with another performer on earth who is retreating from a place they built which no longer accepts them. They team up and find that they enjoy one another's company and wild adventures ensue which teach them both a bit about themselves.

Eighteen-year-old Dontrell Jones the Third decides that it is his duty and destiny to venture into the Atlantic Ocean in search of an ancestor lost during the Middle Passage. But his family is not at all ready to abandon its prized son to the waters of a mysterious and haunting past. Blending poetry, humor, wordplay, and ritual, Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea is a present-day hero’s quest exploring the lengths and depths we must go to redeem history’s wrongs.

Set in Baltimore (and partially developed here back in 2014!), this is a true Charm City story with stops at Johns Hopkins, The National Aquarium, and the Eastern Shore. Staged in the round for maximum audience immersion, director Makeima Freeland’s vision puts the emphasis on the rhythm, poetry, and flow of Nathan Alan Davis’ incredible script.

Performed at The Peale Museum (Baltimore’s Community Museum & the first building in the Western Hemisphere to be designed and built specifically as a museum!) during Black History Month, Dontrell is is a story that asks how we can move forward, venture, and ascend to new heights within our lineage without forgetting where we’ve come from but appreciating it fully.

Jae Jones was cast as the Father, Dontrell Jones Sr. He also had a cameo as the ancestor who appears at the end to Dontrell Jones Jr. Jae played a father who was an almost retired security guard. While his son is a dreamer, Dontrell Jones Sr. has his feet firmly rooted to the ground. He has to remind his son of his responsibilities and how to stay grounded to reality. The family has anxiety surrounding the upcoming fall of their son, Dontrell Jones Jr heading off to college. The son seems unfocused and chasing a dream of connecting with his ancestor. The character that Jae is playing has rough memories of his older male relative seeking connection with their ancestor as well which led to them being committed and later committing suicide. His character is tasked as the last ditch effort to wake up the son before he uproots his life in pursuit of something which drove other members of the family mad.

          Warrior Women

A great monologue showcasing the physicality and vocal range that Jae Jones gives to his character Dontrell Jones Sr. as he schools his son in why his mother is protecting him the way that she is. His passion as a father is shown here through his insistence and intentional delivery.

          Ancestor Cameo

Jae Jones played the father in the show 'Dontrell Who Kissed the Sea'. However at the end of the show he makes a cameo as the ancestor who his son has been trying so desperately to connect to. Jae learned a monologue in Yoruba for this part and partnered with their resident dramaturg to be sure of his accuracy of pronunciation. He wears a headdress (created by the costume designer Liz Miller of Liz Miller Productions) to complete the transformation from shaved head to a more rastafarian look with Yoruba tribal crown for a convincing 30 second character change.

          Family Dynamic

In this clip, we can more fully appreciate how both Dontrell Jones Sr and the mother of the family are portrayed. This show gave great thought to honest characterization of today's black family in all its facets. Here he banters with his wife as she tells him like it is, from his den all the way upstairs...
